North Missouri Solid Waste Management District, Region B

Keeping banned items out of north Missouri ditches

Formed in 1992 under RSMo Chapter 260, Region B is the largest solid waste district in Missouri: eleven counties, 75 communities. For over twenty years it has collected household hazardous waste and landfill-banned items that might otherwise be dumped illegally in ditches, creeks or on private land.

What the District takes, and what it costs

Collection events are for residents of all eleven Region B counties. Residential only — no business or commercial drop-offs, no toxic or medical waste, no joint compounds or empty paint cans, and no mixed waste.

District grants

The District Grant program provides financial assistance to cities, counties, nonprofits and other organizations for projects that reduce the generation of solid waste, create or improve markets for recovered material, or improve the handling of items banned from landfills by Missouri law. Funds are intended for projects that are sustainable and lead to long-term diversion.

Recently approved: Hope Haven Industries, Inc., a sheltered workshop in Chillicothe, received $20,000 to purchase a newer pickup for collecting and transporting recyclables across the district.

Goals for FY2023

The District published nine waste-reduction goals. Among them: education on what belongs in recycling bins; a detailed list of every recycling center and what each one collects; special access for residents to tire, electronics, appliance, battery and household hazardous waste collection events, with funding sought for semi-permanent sites in different counties; continued diversion of target-list items including glass; promoting recycling at the State Fair; helping schools and businesses across the eleven counties start small and expand their recycling; a new District website; and work with Ripple Glass to establish glass recycling in Region B.

Glass in Chillicothe. The District is working with partners to start a glass recycling project in Chillicothe. Glass will be collected and transported by Ripple Glass in Kansas City; the recycled product is used to make insulation and bottles.
